SPARTANS EARN FIFTH STRAIGHT WIN WITH SECOND HALF COMEBACK

ST. LOUIS— (RV) Missouri Baptist Men's Soccer came from behind to defeat William Woods 2-1 in the AMC Game of the Week on Saturday. The Spartans moved to 2-0 in conference play and 6-1-1 overall.

After 30 evenly played minutes, William Woods took the lead via an own goal by the Spartans. Despite not recording a shot on goal in the first half, the visiting Owls went into the break ahead 1-0. At the other end of the field, MBU attempted six shots with five on goal.

It took seven minutes after the restart for the Spartans to find the equalizer. From about 25 yards out, Brandon Boos unleashed a bullet of a shot into the top left corner of the goal (HIGHLIGHT). The senior's second of the year knotted the match at one.

It would stay tied until just under five minutes remained. That's when Louie Perez, Mattia Giangrande, and Jona Oesterling connected for the home side. Perez nutmegged a defender and found Giangrande striding into the left side of the WWU box. Giangrande spotted Oesterling on the back post for a tap-in and a 2-1 Mo. Bap lead. It was Oesterling's second goal of the season.

The Spartans would hold on for the final four minutes and earn their fifth straight win. MBU launched 15 shot attempts in the second half with nine on goal.

"The boys recovered today from a mistake that cost us in the first half and played brilliantly to regain the lead in second half," noted MBU Head Coach Jake Alvernia. "Brandon Boos' strike was a turning point in second half.  We were wasteful with our chances today.  I thought we created enough chances to win and be comfortable today.  Credit to WWU for playing tough today.  A good performance and a good win for us. Now we'll focus on STLCOP."

Freshman defender Michael Scanlon earned 'Man of the Match' honors.

"Mike was extraordinary today," commented Alvernia. "He was very good in possession and locked it down defensively."

The Spartans will be back in action on Wednesday against St. Louis College of Pharmacy. Kickoff is scheduled for 12:30 pm at CBC Field.
