SPARTANS EARN FIRST WIN WITH THREE GOAL OUTBURST

ST. LOUIS—Missouri Baptist Women's Soccer broke through with its first win of 2019 on Saturday afternoon against William Woods. The Spartans exploded for three second half goals to knock off the Owls and even their AMC record at 1-1.

After a quiet first half for both teams, the second half started with a bang for MBU. Just two minutes after the restart, Alayna Buxton delivered a corner into the heart of the box. It deflected first off Jackie Hagan and then off the shoulder of Riley Janvrin. The ball looped over the head of WWU goalkeeper Michlya Handley and into the back of the net.

The Spartans had their first lead of the season but they weren't satisfied. In the 83rd minute, Gianna Gore dribbled around several defenders, from her own half all the way to the Owls' penalty area. She then dropped it off to a waiting Madison Dodd all alone in front of goal. Dodd finished it off for her second of the year and a 2-0 MBU advantage.

Four minutes later, Dodd and Gore reversed their roles. This time it was Dodd who played in Gore on the right side of the box and the freshman slotted home for an insurmountable 3-0 lead.

The Spartans out-chanced the Owls 10-2 in the second half and finished with five shots on goal compared to three for WWU. Jemica Artillaga made three saves to earn her first clean sheet of the season.

MBU will now have a good opportunity to make it back-to-back wins when they welcome St. Louis College of Pharmacy to CBC Field on Wednesday. Kickoff is scheduled for 10 am.
