Box Score ST. LOUIS— Freshmen
Mara George and
Skyla Koch scored second-half goals to lead MBU Women's Soccer to a 2-1 victory over the University of Health Sciences & Pharmacy (UHSP) on Saturday at Spartan Field. The Spartans are now 1-0 overall and in AMC play ahead of Tuesday's upcoming trip to No. 25 Columbia.
After waiting an extra month to get the season underway, it took the Spartans a half to shake the rust off against a UHSP squad that had already played four games. MBU attempted four shots in the opening 45 but didn't trouble Eutectics' keeper, Bailey Bosler.
The offense came to life in the second half however. In the 54
th minute,
Lea Mason was fouled at the 15-yard line in Eutectics' territory.
Madison Dodd's free kick was saved by Bosler but the rebound fell perfectly into the path of
Mara George. The Fort Zumwalt North grad capitalized for her first collegiate goal.
George was involved in the offense again eight minutes later. This time she delivered a cross into the six-yard box where fellow freshmen
Skyla Koch was there to tap it home. Koch's first career goal gave the Spartans' a commanding 2-0 lead.
UHSP didn't go quietly. They pulled a goal back in the 72
nd minute to make it a game but MBU goalkeeper
Hanna Harrison stood tall in the final 20 minutes. The sophomore finished the day with seven saves to preserve the victory.
Both teams attempted 13 total shots with the Spartans' claiming the edge in shots on goal (9-8). MBU improved to 5-0-1 all-time against the Eutectics after last season's 0-0 draw.
The Spartans will continue the fall portion of the 2020-21 season on Tuesday against rival Columbia College. The last time MBU saw the 25
th ranked Cougars was in last season's AMC Championship game. Columbia prevailed that day by a score of 2-0.
Kickoff on Tuesday is scheduled for 4:30 pm at R. Marvin Owens Field. The live broadcast can be viewed at
