HANNIBAL, Mo – Missouri Baptist Women's Soccer eluded upset-minded Hannibal-LaGrange (3-8, 0-4 AMC) on Wednesday night for a 4-3 victory. The win maintained the Spartans' perfect 4-0 AMC record and kept them in lockstep with 14
th ranked Columbia at the top of the conference standings.
The result was ultimately what was expected when the day started. The process of getting to that point, however, was anything but normal. A two-hour delay to the men's game created a complicated situation for the women's start time. Without the benefit of lights at Blackwell Field, the game was moved to nearby Hannibal HS. Kickoff was officially three hours later than originally scheduled.
When the match did finally get underway, junior midfielder
Maddie Mrazik wasted no time putting the Spartans on the board. It took just 2:05 to open the scoring with her second of the year.
Miscommunication from the MBU backline led to a Hannibal tying goal in 14
th minute and the Trojans then took the lead in the 29
th minute off another unfortunate bounce.
The Spartans were down for just over 10 minutes before their leading scorer took over.
Gianna Gore stole the ball deep in HLG territory, charged into the penalty area, and ripped a shot past Trojan keeper Courtney Bayer to tie the game at two.
Gore was at it again in the 56
th minute, this time to give her side the lead back. Bayer came out to close down a potential breakaway for MBU's
Madi Dunahue. The clearance was not controlled by the Hannibal defender and ended up at the feet of Gore who spotted the goalkeeper well off her line. The shot from 20 yards out found out the open net. The Union HS product notched her seventh goal of the season and team-leading 18
th point.
The back-and-forth continued six minutes later as Hannibal once again tied the game. It remained that way until the 82
nd minute when
Madi Dunahue finally put the nail in the Trojans' coffin.
Hannah Leahy picked out Dunahue from her own half of the field and the junior outran the HLG defender for a breakaway. Dunahue's left-footed strike snuck past the hard-charging Courtney Bayer and into the far corner for what proved to be the game-winner.
There was not enough time for Hannibal to mount another comeback and the Spartans held on for a wild 4-3 victory. They outshot the Trojans 9-3 for the match.
In addition to being undefeated in the AMC, Missouri Baptist is now back to a .500 record overall (6-6) ahead of Saturday's meeting with Stephens College (7-5, 3-1 AMC). Start time is set for 6 pm at Spartan Field.
