UNBEATEN STREAK ENDS AS MEN’S SOCCER TRIPPED UP BY HARRIS-STOWE

ST. LOUIS— MBU Men's Soccer (5-7-1, 2-2-1 AMC) fell 1-0 on an overtime penalty kick against Harris-Stowe (10-4, 3-3 AMC) on Wednesday. The defeat ends the Spartans' four game unbeaten streak.

The Spartans attempted 15 shots in the match but struggled to find a clinical finish. They also failed to produce from six corner kick attempts.

As the scoreless match wore on, a chippiness between the two crosstown rivals began to develop. Five yellow cards were handed out from 29 fouls between the two sides.

One of those yellow cards was shown to Brandon Burton in the 65th minute and it would come back to bite the Spartans in overtime. 22 seconds into the extra period, Burton chased after a loose ball in the Hornets' penalty area and came into contact with the goalkeeper. The official deemed the contact was enough for Burton's second offense and he was shown a red.

Missouri Baptist was only down to 10 men for 27 seconds before Harris-Stowe made them pay. This time, a Hornets player was allegedly tripped in the MBU penalty area and the official pointed to the PK spot. Ricardo Benini stepped up and converted past Mo Bap keeper Wessel Berenschot for the game-winner.

The Spartans will look rebound at home on Saturday against William Woods. Start time at Spartan Field is set for 7 pm.
