ST. LOUIS – The Missouri Baptist University women's basketball team was firing on all cylinders as it toppled Central Baptist College, 76-59, inside the Carl and Deloris Petty Sports & Recreation Complex Saturday afternoon. Outside of the first three minutes of the game, the Spartans led from wire-to-wire and secured the season sweep of the Mustangs.
With the win, Missouri Baptist moved to 13-5 on the season and 9-3 in the AMC. The Spartans upped their newest winning streak to three games and are now winners in nine of their last 10. CBC, which was held 15 points under its season scoring average, dropped to 8-5 overall and 3-5 in conference play.
In an all-around effort, five different Spartans scored in double figures with
Alexis Allstun,
Taylor Norris and
Tionne Taylor each tallying 15 apiece. Between Norris and Taylor, the two lit it up from beyond the arc, combining to shoot 7-for-11 for a red-hot 3-point percentage of 63%. Joining them in double digits was
Lauren Ebert with 11 points and three 3s, and
Kim Shaw with 10 points and a pair of treys to boot.
One would be hard pressed to find flaws in MBU's victory. The Spartans spread the ball well with a season-best 20 assists, out-rebounded Central Baptist, 42-31, stayed out of foul trouble and shot above 40% from the floor and from 3-point range. In fact, MoBap's displayed consistent shooting throughout the entire contest shooting above 40% in every period including a 53.8% clip in the third quarter.
Three Spartans quietly approached double-double range all taking different paths.
Taylor Norris posted a game-high 6 assists to go with her 15 points,
Alexis Allstun went for 15 points and 8 rebounds, while
Kim Shaw posted 10 points and 6 rebounds off the bench.
Senior
Joelle Atkins wrapped up the Spartans' four-game week with one of the most impressive runs defensively in recent history. The Cabool, Mo. native recorded 11 rebounds, 3 assists and 1 steal on Saturday and ended the week with averages of 16.0 rebounds/game, 1.8 blocks/game and 1.8 steals/game. She currently leads the conference in both rebounds per game and blocks per game.
MBU is beginning to see the light at the end of the tunnel with just one more loaded week before entering AMC Tournament play. On the docket for next week are a pair of road games at Harris-Stowe State University on Monday and Stephens College on Wednesday, followed by back-to-back home games on Thursday and Saturday with William Woods and Stephens for a second time.
