SPARTANS PILE ON THE GOALS IN 17-2 WIN OVER C-SC

CANTON, Mo. – Currently averaging 15.25 goals per game, the Missouri Baptist University women's lacrosse team has had no trouble scoring in its first four outings. Monday was no different as the Spartans roughed up Culver-Stockton College with a 17-2 victory in the Wildcats' home opener at Ellison Poulton Stadium.

Paired with last year's resounding 18-1 win at Spartan Field, MBU has now outscored the Wildcats 35-3 in two all-time meetings. The Spartans are off to a fast start under first-year MBU women's lacrosse coach Max Ruhl, sitting at 3-1 overall and 2-0 to begin Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference play.

One of the budding stars for the Missouri Baptist attack is sophomore Chayleb Deves. The 5-11 midfielder out of Ellisville, Mo., has posted 3+ goals in each game this season and set a new career-high in scoring on Monday with 6 goals and 2 assists. The Marquette High School product boosted her season goal total to 18, which moves her into the KCAC's No. 1 spot for goals per game (4.50).

The Spartans didn't turn to Deves and her scoring prowess until halfway through the first period, although the sophomore was credited with an assist on Melina Custer's goal to kick things off at the 27:41 mark. Following a Jordan Haeusser goal to put MBU up 2-0, Sopheea Vomund scored the first of just goals for Culver-Stockton.

MoBap retaliated with four goals in a row, including Kamryn Bell's ninth goal of the year and three-straight from Chayleb Deves. Heading into halftime, the Spartans led the Wildcats, 7-2.

The second half belonged to the Spartans. C-SC spent much of its time trying to halt MBU's goal-scoring party but had no such luck. Seven different Spartans scored in the half to amass 10 goals, while the Wildcats were shut out entirely and limited to just two shots in the final 30 minutes.

Missouri Baptist capitalized on several Culver-Stockton miscues throughout the afternoon. Jordan Haeusser, Kamryn Bell, and Caroline Karr each scored one man-up goal apiece, while the Spartans went 4-for-5 with their free-position shots. The trio of Haeusser, Bell, Karr, along with Deves, registered multigoal games. Also getting in on the scoring action on Monday was Ashley Avery, Brianna Fischer, and Sameera Hammad, who registered her first goal of the year.

Goalies Kaitlin Mills and Amelia Shaw had an equal timeshare in goal as the former was credited with the win and 2 saves.

The Spartans will be wrapping up a six-game road swing this weekend with games at the University of Saint Mary and Missouri Valley College on Thursday and Saturday, respectively.
