LEAVENWORTH, Kan. – The Missouri Baptist University women's lacrosse team used the program's largest offensive output in 5+ years to topple University of Saint Mary (Kan.), 21-1, on the road Thursday evening. It marks the fourth win in a row for the Spartans, who remain undefeated in league play at 4-1, 3-0 KCAC.
The Spartans never trailed in the winning effort and opened the game with four consecutive goals. Saint Mary's lone point in the lopsided affair came at the 19:05 mark in the first half to make it 4-1, but it was all Missouri Baptist the rest of the way. The Spires' one goal is the fewest allowed this season and just the fifth time in school history that the Spartans have held their opponent to one goal or less.
In an impressive first-half display, Missouri Baptist outscored the Spires, 14-1. The Spartans' top scoring threats –
Chayleb Deves and
Jordan Haeusser – didn't disappoint as they combined for nine of the 14 first-half goals. Joining the offensive fireworks in the opening period were
Kamryn Bell with back-to-back goals in the sixth minute,
Caroline Karr (2), and
Ashley Avery.
With a running clock kicking in after MoBap reached a 10-point lead, the Spartans still managed to score seven in the second half. Two more Spartans found the back of the net after halftime including
Sameera Hammad (2) and
Melina Custer (1).
For the third time this season,
Chayleb Deves led the Spartans offensively by tying her career-high in goals (6). In addition to the goals, the sophomore standout was just as dominant in winning possession for the Spartans as she corralled 13 of the team's 16 draw controls.
KCAC Defensive Player of the Week
Jordan Haeusser tied for a game-high 6 ground balls and was just one goal shy of Deves for the team- and game-high in goals. The junior midfielder was also a perfect 3-for-3 in her free-position shots. Similarly, freshman
Caroline Karr didn't miss when presented with two FPS opportunities. The local product out of Notre Dame High School finished with three goals and has now scored in four straight games.
Another Spartan adding to a streak was sophomore attacker
Kamryn Bell, who has recorded four consecutive multi-goal games. Bell had three goals and an assist on Thursday night.
Kaitlin Mills started between the pipes and made four saves, while allowing just the one goal in 60 minutes of action.
The Spartans return to the field on Saturday (March 20) when they visit Missouri Valley College. The Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference tilt is slated for 12 p.m. at Gregg-Mitchell Field in Marshall, Mo.
