BATESVILLE, Ark. – MBU Men's Soccer (8-4, 5-2 AMC) maintained its second place position in the AMC standings after a 3-1 victory against Lyon College (3-4-1, 2-2 AMC) on Tuesday afternoon. The result guaranteed the Spartans a home game in the AMC Quarterfinals on April 3.
Tuesday's goal-fest began in the 28
th minute.
Antonio Bussu picked the far corner from nearly 25 yards out for his second goal of the season.
Kristian Dimitrov and
Louie Perez registered assists on play setup.
Lyon tied the game in the 41
st minute but the second half was all MBU. Three minutes into the period, Joe Ruane sent
Louie Perez in down the left wing. The sophomore beat Lyon keeper Dan Huff with a left-footed strike to the near post to reassert the MBU lead.
The Scots outshot the Spartans 12-3 in the second half and it looked like the lead might, again, be on the ropes. But in the 86
th minute
Brandon Burton put those chances to bed with his second goal of the season. After eluding a sliding challenge from a Lyon defender, Burton cut inside at the top of the box and fired an attempt with his right foot. The strike, which resembled the goal
Antonio Bussu scored in the first half, beat the goalkeeper Huff to the far corner.
The insurance marker sealed the deal for the Spartans' eighth win of the season and fifth in AMC play. Goalkeeper
Wessel Berenschot finished with four saves to earn his sixth victory between the pipes.
"Give the whole team the Man of the Match today," commented Head Coach
Jake Alvernia. "Total team effort today. The boys fought like poet warriors."
The Spartans will now have 10 days before closing the regular season against Harris-Stowe on March 26. Kickoff at Spartan Field is scheduled for 7 pm.
