ST. LOUIS—MBU Men's Soccer (9-4, 6-2 AMC) will go into the AMC postseason tournament on a three-match winning streak after downing Harris-Stowe (1-4, 0-2 AMC) 4-1 on Friday night at Spartan Field. Prior to the match, this year's five seniors (
Davide Bucarelli,
Michael Scanlon,
Connor Riley,
Joel Strauser, and
Miguel Alvarado) were recognized with the traditional final home game ceremony.
The goal-scoring in a dominant first half by the Spartans started in the 11
th minute.
Joe Ruane picked out
Brandon Burton with a cross to the left side of the penalty area. Burton chested the ball down, controlled it, and let a shot go that found the top corner.
Barely a minute later, the lead doubled on a goal by
Cullen Barr. Burton played in
Dom Smith who tried a shot that was saved by HSSU goalkeeper Nick Morales. The rebound, however, fell to Barr who tapped it home for his third goal of the year.
Reece Kral gave the Spartans a commanding 3-0 lead in the in the 24
th minute. Morales' clearance attempt didn't go as planned and fell to Kral who had space. The junior midfielder let a screamer of a shot go from 25 yards out and Morales, already a little off his line, had no chance.
The Spartans gave one back on a penalty kick a few minutes later but still went into the halftime break ahead by two goals. They outshot the Hornets 10-4 in the first 45.
MBU had several opportunities to extend the advantage in the early going of the second half but Morales stood tall to keep it at 3-1. Finally, in the 88
th minute, it was Burton again who sealed the victory. A give-and-go with
Antonio Bussu sent Burton in alone against Morales. The Englishman slotted home for his second of the night and fourth of the season.
The victory locked up the No. 2 seed for the Spartans in the AMC postseason tournament. On points, the Spartans also earned a share of the AMC regular season title with Columbia.
"Good performance tonight and good to be able to play our seniors, " noted Head Coach
Jake Alvernia. "This was the most important thing to share in the conference title and lock in the two seed in our tournament."
Brandon Burton and
Reece Kral were named Co-Man of the Match.
"Brandon was very good going forward tonight and Reece was absolutely brilliant in the middle both on and off the ball, " commented Alvernia.
The Spartans will now have a week off to prepare for the AMC Quarterfinals on April 10. Health Sciences and Pharmacy will visit Spartan Field as the 7-seed. Start time is still to be determined.
