ST. LOUIS, MO. – Missouri Baptist softball shut down cross-town rival UHSP on Tuesday afternoon allowing just one run across two conference victories.
Shelby Sievers allowed no runs in her complete-game shutout in game one while
Haley Tate and
Ally Dunaway kept the Eutectics quiet in game two.
Â
Sievers, a junior from Poplar Bluff, Missouri, needed just 69 pitches to get through seven innings in the first contest. She allowed just three baserunners and one hit while striking out three. Offensively, the Spartans only collected one hit from
Allison Pingel and scored just two runs on sloppy play from UHSP to take a 2-1 victory.
Â
The home bats woke up in the second game and received strong support from the circle in a 5-1 victory.
Madalyn Bone and
Jordan Corby led off with back-to-back singles in the first inning and scored when Pingel doubled off the base of the centerfield wall to put the team up 2-0. Three more runs came home on more fielding errors from UHSP in the next two innings to extend the lead to 5-1.
Â
Tate took the early lead and defended it with six scoreless innings while allowing two hits and collecting three strikeouts. The win pushes the sophomore's record to 4-2 on the season and gave her team their sixth conference win.
Â
Next up for the Spartans is a makeup doubleheader against William Woods on April 15. The first pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
