ST. LOUIS, MO. – The Spartans exploded for nine runs game two's win after being held scoreless in a 1-0 defeat in the first matchup. The split pushed Missouri Baptist's record to 6-6 overall and a 3-1 AMC record to start conference play.
Â
Lyon was able to get one run off
Shelby Sievers in the top of the second inning of game one which was all that Scot starting pitcher Katelyn Platt would need. The Spartan lineup was held to just three hits in the 1-0Â loss.
Â
Sievers received a loss though she pitched a gem as well. The Poplar Bluff, Missouri native posted seven innings of work allowing just one run on five hits with six strikeouts dropping her season ERA to 2.29 through eight games.
Â
The Scots again got to the MBU starter early in game two, scoring a run off
Haley Tate in the top of the first before she escaped a bases-loaded jam.
Â
In the bottom of the second, Skyler Ruiz drove in
Kaitlyn Chadwick with an infield single to tie the game.
Madalyn Bone then drove in the go-ahead run in the next at-bat with a single down the third-base line to bring in
Cami Meddows.
Â
Allison Pingel continued to pile on runs in the third inning with her third home run of the season that brought in Sievers from first. Later in the inning, Meddows drove in a run on a single, stole third, and scored on a wild throw from the catcher. The Spartans led 6-1 after three innings.
Â
Tate hit more trouble in the top of the fourth. She gave up a pair of runs before being replaced by senior captain
Ally Dunaway. Dunaway got a pair of groundouts to work out of the jam without any more damage done.
Â
The Spartans got some insurance in the fourth and fifth innings. Pingel stayed hot at the plate with a long single to right-center field to bring in
Jordan Corby in the fourth. In the fifth, Bone drove in
Katelyn Turbyfill and came around to score to widen the gap to six runs.
Â
Dunaway, with more than enough run support, shut the Scots down in her 3.2 innings of work. She allowed just two hits and earned the win in relief to get her team back to the .500 mark.
When it was all said and done, Pingel had collected three RBIs, two hits, and a home run. Bone also had a strong day with two hits in four at-bats, one run scored, and two RBIs.
Â
Conference play continues on April 6 against Hannibal-LaGrange in Hannibal, Missouri. Tuesday's first pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
