BRAKE, CORBY SUPPLY THE OFFENSE IN SPLIT WITH TROJANS

HANNIBAL, MO. – Missouri Baptist softball split another AMC doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon, losing to Hannibal-LaGrange 5-1 in game one and rebounding for a 4-3 victory in game two. The Spartans now stand at 7-7 overall and 4-2 in conference play.

The Trojans jumped on the visitors early in game one with a pair of runs in the first followed by another run in the third and two more in the fourth. Ally Dunaway stopped the bleeding with 2.1 scoreless innings of work out the bullpen.

Freshman Kolby Brake supplied the only offense for MBU with a solo homerun to dead center in the top of the third, the first in her career. The Spartans went on to lose game one with a 5-1 final score.

Haley Tate took the circle for her team in the second game and kept the Trojans scoreless through the first two innings.

The offense backed her up with three runs in the third inning. Madalyn Bone started the inning with a single to left-center and stole second base to get into scoring position. Jordan Corby drove her in with a ball in play to give the team a 1-0 lead.

Megan Pfeiffer then walked to put runners on the corner for Brake who pushed Corby across for the second run of the inning. With Pfeiffer on third later in the inning, Kaitlyn Chadwick picked up the RBI with a sacrifice fly to center field to make it 3-0.

Corby scored another run in the top of the fourth when she took a 3-2 pitch from Emily Bohm deep over the left-field fence for her first home run of the season and eighth in her career.

Tate rolled through the Trojan offense in the third and fourth, but they found some success in the fifth. A lead-off walk and a double put the home team on the board. They plated two more runs before the end of the inning to draw within one at 4-3.

In the sixth, both teams put runners in scoring position but neither team could get the job done. The Spartans went 1-2-3 in the top of the seventh and trusted on Tate to finish off the complete game in the bottom half.

The sophomore from Eureka, Missouri got the leadoff hitter to ground out, struck out the next batter looking, and snagged a line drive up the middle to finish it off. Tate collected her third win and second complete game of the 2021 season with a 4-3 final.

Next on the schedule is a home doubleheader with AMC-rival William Woods University. The Owls come to town on Saturday, April 10 with the first pitch slated for 2 p.m.
