ST. LOUIS – Missouri Baptist Men's Soccer fell 1-0 to (RV) Lyon College on Saturday afternoon at Spartan Field. The Spartans (0-1 AMC) will play their final non-conference match on Wednesday against Culver-Stockton before returning to AMC play next Saturday at home vs. UHSP.
In a rematch of last season AMC Semifinals, Missouri Baptist and Lyon matched each other stride for stride in the first conference matchup of this season. Both teams had two shots on goal in a first half that was quiet in terms of offense for both sides.
The scoreless deadlock continued late into the second half when Lyon finally capitalized on a rare scoring opportunity in the 78
th minute. Juan Araque found space and converted past MBU keeper
Wessel Berenschot for the only goal of the match.
"Another good matchup with Lyon but we'll come away from this disappointed to not pick up points," noted Head Coach
Jake Alvernia. "We had several chances to score tonight and didn't find the back of the net."
The Spartans outshot the Scots 5-4, led by two attempts on target from
Richie Taylor.
Rasmus Svensson had four attempts with one on goal.
"Man of the match was Rasmus," said Alvernia. "He changed the way we went forward in the first half and was brilliant in the second half."
Kickoff against Culver-Stockton on Wednesday is scheduled for 7 pm. Next Saturday's matchup with Heath Sciences & Pharmacy will also be a 7 pm start at Spartan Field.
