SPARTANS CONQUER WWU 2-1 IN LAST REGULAR SEASON GAME

FULTON, Mo. – The Missouri Baptist University women's soccer team ended the regular season on a high note defeating William Woods University on the road Saturday, 2-1. The Spartans jumped out on top, 2-0, in the first half, and held off the Owls to avenge last year's 2-1 loss at Spartan Field.

Missouri Baptist enters the postseason at 11-4-2 overall and 7-1 in the AMC, which earned the Spartans the No. 2 seed in the AMC Women's Soccer Tournament. As winners in eight of its past nine contests, MoBap will host No. 7 seed Williams Baptist on Friday, Nov. 4, a team the Spartans shut out 6-0 earlier this month.

The Spartans opened scoring in the 10th minute when midfielder Jordyn Besserman rushed the goal after receiving an upward pass from senior Gianna Gore. Besserman pressed past a William Woods defender and sent a short, but hard, shot to the bottom right corner of the net that resulted in an Owl-on-Owl collision in the box.

Scoring seized until Gianna Gore, a Union, Mo. native, accelerated the ball to the opposite side of the WWU goalkeeper with six minutes remaining in the half. Gore's goal put the Spartans out in front 2-0 heading into the break.

William Woods (6-9-2, 3-3-1 AMC) came back quick in the second half. WWU defender Chloe Overkamp overtook the ball (48th minute) from MBU and squeezed it into the back of the net. Neither team managed to score the rest of the half.

Missouri Baptist edged the Owls 14-11 in shots taken, however, the two teams were even when it came to shots on goal at six apiece. MBU goalkeeper Hanna Harrison saved five out of the six WWU shots on goal to preserve another Spartan win.

Friday's AMC Women's Soccer Quarterfinal matchup against Williams Baptist University is set for a 5 p.m. start time.
