ST. LOUIS – Softball continues their run of dominance, sweeping the University of Health Sciences and Pharmacy Eutectics 15-2, and 8-1. The Spartans have now won six straight and 10 of their last 11 games.
GAME ONE
Looking to get above .500 for the first time this season, MoBap's offense came alive early and often throughout game one of the doubleheader. An error allowed MBU to put leadoff hitter,
Madalyn Bone, on base to start the game before
Ellie Wessel singled to give the Spartans two runners with no outs early in the first. Errors quickly got the better of UHSP as Bone came home off a throwing error after
Kolby Brake singled to advance the runners. Brake stole second before advancing to third on a passed ball that allowed Wessel to score. With a 2-0 lead and a runner on third with no outs,
Shelby Sievers delivered a single into center field to extend the early lead to 3-0. Sievers worked her way to third by stealing second and advancing on a ground ball to third.
Haley Tate doubled into the right field gap scoring Sievers. Tate advanced to third on a groundout by
Sydney Berry before another Spartan double off the bat of
AnnaBeth Batson brought her home to give the MBU the 5-0 lead in the top of the first.
UHSP picked up a run in the bottom of the first, as Michelle Hollon rushed home off a sac fly by Leah Beach to cut into the Spartan lead, but that was as close as the game would get.
Bone doubled down the line to lead off the second inning but was caught attempting to steal third. Brake once again found herself on second base, this time off a double to center field. After Sievers was hit by a pitch,
Kaylee Morris smashed a pitch over the outfield wall to extend the Spartan lead, 8-1. Tate doubled before the inning would end but was left on base after a strikeout would end the inning.
UHSP failed to get on the board in the bottom of the second and neither team would score in the third inning. The Spartans exploded for five more runs in top of the fourth as seven Spartans got on base and four registered a hit with two going for extra bases.
MBU added two more insurance runs in the top of the fifth to more than lock up the mercy rule victory as the Spartans would defeat the Eutectics, 15-1 in game one of the doubleheader. Brake, three-for-three, and Sievers, two-for-two, went perfect at the plate as Tate added three hits of her own in four at bats. Tate also collected the win allowing only five hits and one run while striking out three.
GAME TWO
Much like game one, errors plagued the Eutectics early as Bone reached on a throwing error before advancing to second on the errant throw. MBU quickly capitalized as Wessel singled into the outfield allowing Bone to score from second to give MoBap the early 1-0 lead. UHSP kept this game close early but couldn't provide run support.
The Spartans wouldn't be denied for long, as
Isabella Schlemmer led off the ithird nning with a double into the left field gap. Bone once again found her way on base as an error allowed her to advance to third, scoring Schlemmer, to give the Spartans a 2-0 lead. MBU continued to shine at the top of the lineup as Wessel singled, scoring Bone, before scoring off a single from Sievers to extend the Spartans lead, 4-0. Morris reached on an error before Tate brought Sievers home with a single to extend the lead to five. Back-to-back singles from
Kate Hughes and
Molly McPheeters allowed three more runs to score giving the Spartans a 8-0 lead.
That is how the score would remain as MBU defeated UHSP 8-0 in five innings to improve to 2-0 in the AMC and 11-9 overall. Sievers picked up her seventh victory of the season allowing only three hits while striking out three over five innings to earn the complete game shutout. Seven Spartans recorded a hit as Sievers, McPheeters, and Wessel collected two apiece.
Conference play continues for the Spartans as they head to Batesville, Ark. to take on Lyon College in a doubleheader on Sat. April 2
nd. First pitch is scheduled for 12:00 PM.
