FULTON, Mo. – Softball sweeps William Woods University, 6-0, 5-1, on Wednesday to secure the two-seed heading into the AMC Championships.
GAME ONE
The Spartans struck first and hit hard in the top of second inning as
AnnaBeth Batson blasted a home run over the left field wall to give the Spartans an early 2-0 lead.
Molly McPheeters was walked and stole second to set up another scoring opportunity.
Madalyn Bone made her first appearance since taking a ball of the hands against (4) Freed-Hardeman on April 19. Bone, batting ninth, as opposed to her normal spot as lead-off, reached on a fielding error that allowed McPheeters to advance to third. Bone stole second to put herself in scoring position.
Megan Pfeiffer bunted and reached on the fielder's choice. WWU attempted to gun down McPheeters at home but couldn't beat her there. With bases loaded
Haley Tate looked to add to the early offense. Tate reached on a fielder's choice, but Bone was thrown out at home. With the bases still loaded
Shelby Sievers was hit by the pitch scoring Wessel to extend the lead to 4-0.
Both teams failed to score until the Spartans added another in the top of the sixth and seventh. Pfeiffer singled in top of the sixth to score Bone and extend the lead to 5-0. McPheeters singled in the top of the seventh to add another insurance run scoring
Kaylee Morris. Tate pitched six innings of shutout ball as the Spartans built a 6-0 lead and was replaced by Sievers in the bottom of the seventh. With two runners already on, Sievers shut the door putting down the next three batters. Tate earned her seventh win of the season while striking out one on her way to six shutout innings.
GAME TWO
MoBap wasted no time in game two as a single by Sievers scored Pfeiffer to give the Spartans the early 1-0 lead in the top of the first. William Woods refused to be held scoreless again as they added a run of their own in the bottom of the first to tie things up.
Pitching from both sides dominated this one until the Spartans broke the 1-1 tie in the top of the sixth.
Kaylee Morris singled into center field to put the go-ahead run on board.
Kolby Brake doubled into center field to put Morris on third. A double off the bat of Batson scored Brake and Morris break the tie and give the Spartans the 3-1 lead.
MBU added another run in the top of the seventh as Sievers hit a solo shot to left field. Sievers pitched the complete game allowing only one run on five hits while striking out eight for her fourteenth win of the season.
MBU softball secured the two-seed with the sweep of William Woods heading into the AMC Championships. MoBap will be taking on the seventh seeded Eagles of Williams Baptist on Tuesday, May 3 in the quarterfinals at the Antimi Softball Complex in Columbia, Mo.
