Box Score ST. LOUIS- In a bid to stay on top of the American Midwest Conference standings, Missouri Baptist Men's Soccer took on the Hornets of Harris-Stowe.
The first half was a slow one with less than five shots coming from either team. The Spartans were chipping away at the Hornets defense, looking to earn that all important first goal of the game. The Spartans were able to get in a couple of good looks- a header from sophomore
Marko Dordevic and a shot high from freshman
Ognjen Bozovic. MBU unfortunately was unable to find the back of the net.
MBU was putting on the pressure in the second half, possessing the ball for the majority of the period. While most of the time was spent in the Hornets end, the Spartans were unable to penetrate the defense till late in the game. With a little over 11 minutes left in the second half the Spartans took advantage of a free kick. Graduate student
Jack Griffiths took the kick, landing it right in front of the net. Senior
Giuseppe Verrecchia was there to collect the ball as the Hornets defense tried to knock it out of play. The Venafro, Italy native was able to send it back in front of the net where the goalie tried to collect the ball. Dordevic was there to get a head on it once it deflected off the goalie's glove, sending it straight into the goal. The Spartans were able to maintain the lead throughout the remainder of the half, serving up the Hornets their first loss at home.
MBU will be back at home on Saturday, Oct 14 to take on William Woods University at 7 PM.
