ST. LOUIS- It was a battle to the end in the Senior Night match up against William Woods University. Regardless of their effort, neither team could find the back of the net, resulting in a 0-0 draw.
As is tradition, Spartan seniors
Rasmus Svensson,
Joe Fischer,
Matteo Gigliozzi,
Seosamh Sheerin,
Dominic Smith,
Jack Griffiths, and
Callum McKinlay were honored before the game. In addition,
Brendan McAllister's family was there to receive his jersey on his behalf as this would have been his senior night as well.
Right from the start both teams were aggressive on the pitch. Senior,
Jack Carney let off a shot only a minute into the game, but it was blocked by a Williams Woods defender. The Spartans did not let up, putting the Owl goalkeeper to work. Shots coming from
Marko Dordevic,
Ognjen Bozovic, and
Jack Ridley were on target, forcing the keeper into action. This continued well into the second half where two more shots on goal by
Jack Griffiths and
Sean Bannon brought the Spartans on target attempts to seven.
Callum McKinlay skills were on display in goal as he posted seven saves of his own. The Middlesbrough, England native came in clutch in critical moments where Woods had the advantage. Spartan defense also showed their mettle, blocking five shots from the Owls.
In the end, neither team was able to break the deadlock, and the game ended in a 0-0 draw.
The Spartans will take on Williams Baptist University in one last home contest of the regular season on Wednesday, Oct 18.
