ST. LOUIS- With conference rankings on the line, Missouri Baptist University was taking on another top AMC team, Williams Baptist University. The Spartans were going up against a familiar face as the Eagle's head coach, Carl Kennedy, is a former MBU Men's Soccer graduate assistant.
The Eagles found themselves on top early into the game, putting a point on the board only seven minutes in. Not much later in the half, they were able to put another point on the board. With the Spartans down 0-2, they were in need of some new life.
The Spartans were gearing up in front of the Eagles goal with
Jovan Mihajlovic out to take the corner kick. The sophomore sent a low ball in where
Ognjen Bozovic was able to deflect it towards the goal.
Sergej Misic was there to then send it on home, scoring the Spartans first goal of the game. Support was coming from goalkeeper
Callum McKinlay who was keeping the Spartans in the game, making one great save after the other.
MBU had to keep up the pressure in the second half if they wanted to even the score. It was a physical affair as both teams were unrelenting in their pressure. The Spartans went up a man when an Eagle earned his second yellow of the game. Shortly after the MBU earned a foul in the box, resulting in a penalty kick.
Dominic Smith stepped up to take the shot but the Eagles goalie Rodrigo Pina made the save, shutting down one of the last good opportunities the Spartans had.
With Misic's lone goal in the first half, the Spartans were unable to make up the difference, suffering their first conference loss.
MBU will be looking to bounce back on Saturday (Oct 21) as they take on Hannibal-LaGrange University.
