Spartans Suffer Hard Fought Loss At Home

Although MBU hung with (14) Benedictine throughout the day, the Ravens held the advantage on the scoreboard, beating the Spartans 34-16.

MoBap started the game off receiving the ball and on the opening drive they found some success, but unfortunately missed a 45-yard field goal to end the drive.

It only took the Ravens one play from scrimmage to get into the endzone as Jackson Dooley hit his top receiver Jacob Gathright in stride for a 72-yard touchdown pass.

The MBU offense picked up where they left off and found their way to paydirt to make it 7-6 with a blocked PAT.

On that drive Cooper Brown went 3-4 through the air for 60-yards with completions to three different receivers.

Benedictine's high power offense returned to the field and went 60-yards on eight plays to extend their lead to 14-6 before the end of the first quarter.

At the beginning of the second quarter Dooley was able to find Gathright again for a 54-yard touchdown pass to give them a 15 point lead over MBU.

In need of a response, MoBap started their following drive at their own 35-yard line, and on the first play from scrimmage the Ravens forced a fumble and recovered it to give themselves great field position.

The Spartans defense stepped up in that moment with their backs against the wall and was able to hold Benedictine to just a field goal.

This time the MBU drive started out better as Brown found Gavin Claud twice for a total of 38-yards jump starting the offense.

Later in the drive a roughing the passer penalty aided MoBap and set them up for a field goal that made the score 24-9.

Following the field goal from Jonah Cox, MBU's defense forced a three and out as Anthony Graham picked up a tackle and a QB hurry on third down.

This time with Jordan Simpson in at QB the Spartans marched down the field and Darius Morrison capped off the drive with a 5-yard touchdown run to cut into Benedictine's lead.

Benedictine got the ball with just over two minutes left in the half and they quickly got up the field and scored another touchdown to make it 31-16 going into halftime.

The second half of the game was much quieter than the first as there was only one score when the Ravens hit a 30-yard field goal to make it 34-16.

Prior to the field goal MBU was unable to punch the ball into the endzone on the goalline, but later in the fourth quarter the Spartans' defense picked up a goalline stand of their own.

Despite getting beat on the scoreboard 34-16 the Spartans were able to put up numbers throughout the contest.

Claud hauled in eight catches for 132-yards with a long of 32.

Blake Kight led the defense with 10 tackles followed closely by Giovanoi Sanes with 9 of his own.

Before leaving the game after a big hit, Brown went 10-14 passing for 158-yards, and Simpson went 9-17 for 111-yards.

Both of the Spartans touchdowns came on the ground as Carl Garmon Jr. and Morrison got one apiece.

MBU will wrap up the 2023 season next Saturday when they will host Central Methodist at Spartan Stadium at 1:00 pm.
