LIBERTY, Mo. – The eighth-ranked Missouri Baptist University women's wrestling team fared well at Saturday's William Jewell College Duals going 2-1 with notable wins over Lindenwood University [W, 33-20], ranked 15th in the NCAA, and Simpson College [W, 28-20]. MBU's lone loss on the weekend came to NCAA No. 5-ranked McKendree University in a 31-21 final.
It marked the second time this fall that McKendree and Missouri Baptist have squared off in a dual and Saturday's 10-point margin was a nice improvement from the Nov. 9
th meeting inside of the SRC where the Spartans lost by 34-13.
Three different Spartans were perfect on the weekend including sophomore
Alyssa Quezaire at 101 pounds, sophomore
Josette Partney at 155 and 170 pounds, and freshman
Faith Macharia at 191 pounds.
Quezaire pinned all three of her opponents in 1:21 against McKendree's Lizette Rodriguez, 2:22 against Lindenwood's Megan Valdez, and 1:16 against Simpson's Devyn Moore. Quezaire is now 13-3 overall on the season.
Partney defeated McKendree's Caroline Gilstrap at 170 to start off the tournament before collecting a pair of wins at 155. In the Spartans' 33-21 win over Lindenwood, Partney won 11-0 over Rebecca Strong and finished off the weekend with a pin over Keeley Kehrli of Simpson (1:26).
Macharia rounded out the Spartans' 3-0 marks at the Duals with wins by forfeit in the McKendree and Simpson matches, and a quick 40-second pin of Lindenwood's Kennedy Eggering. The freshman out of Fort Worth, Texas is 16-4 on the year.
Not having wrestled since January 2023, senior
Tiyahna Askew made her season debut and went 2-1 on the weekend at 143 pounds. The 2020-21 NAIA All-American's return was highlighted by an impressive 6-4 win over NCAA No. 7-ranked Viktorya Torres (McKendree) and a pin of Simpson's April Archibeque. Askew's loss came to NCAA No. 8 Alana Duggan (Lindenwood).
At 123, sophomore
Juliana Diaz also posted a 2-1 record at the WJC Duals. After starting off with a 10-0 tech fall loss to McKendree's Shelby Moore, Diaz rebounded with a 10-0 tech fall win over LU's Amanda Mcaleavey and a pin in 1 minute, 3 seconds of Simpson's Lanie Burkhart.
No. 8-ranked Missouri Baptist improved its dual meet record to 4-2 ahead of the MBU Duals on Saturday when they welcome 16
th-ranked Central Methodist University and Trinidad State College to the SRC.
