DES MOINES, Iowa-  In their last regular season match ups, the Missouri Baptist women's wrestling team took on the Gran View University Open this weekend (Feb.4). Out of those who wrestled, the Spartans had four wrestlers who placed.

In the 116-pound bracket, Juliana Diaz earned a second place finish. In her first match up, she went 11-0 securing a tech fall win. In her next bout, Diaz ended things quickly with a big take down at 0:22, pinning her opponent. In the semifinals the freshman was able to score 5 points in the first period and seven in the second with under a minute left, winning 12-2. In the final round, Diaz took on No. 4 ranked Caitlyn Thorne with Central Methodist. The match lasted the full two periods, but Diaz ultimately lost by decision 9-1, earning the silver medal.\

At 143-pounds, Josette Partney was the other Spartan to make it to the championship round. Partney was able to defeat her first opponent by tech fall 10-0 in the first period. In Partney's next match up against No. 18 ranked Morgan Shines of Eastern Oregon University, the Ellisville, MO. native defeated her adversary by decision 12-2. In the finals, Partney was unable to come out on top and was defeated by tech fall 14-4.

Karoline Ortiz, in the first round of the 123-pound bracket, lost by decision 6-2 to No. 1 ranked Carolina Moreno with Southern Oregon . Ortiz then went on a winning streak, making her way into the consolation semifinals. She earned two tech fall victories, both 10-0,  as well as two wins by decision. In the next round Ortiz was pinned at  5:47, making her way to the fifth place match. During the bout Ortiz was able to take down her opponent by tech fall 10-0 in the first period.

In the 191-poud weight class, Ki'Eisha Cathey, also secured a fifth place finish. After falling in the first round, Cathey defeated her next three opponents by fall. After losing in the consolation semifinals by fall, Cathey went on to win the fifth place match by decision, 4-1.

Dymeria Guillory, Abigail Mattson, Eunique Davis, and Alyssa Quezaire also participated in in the open but did not place.

The Spartans will take a three week break before heading to Fort Worth, TX for the SAC Wrestling Championships on Feb. 25^th.
