ST. LOUIS, Mo.- The Missouri Baptist women's wrestling team claimed its first dual victory of the season in its home opener against the William Woods Owls. The Spartans defeated the Owls 32-16.
The dual started with five forfeits, four of which went to the Spartans 103-124, and the Owls claimed one at 131.
The matches started at 138 pounds, and
Zoe Fries represented the Spartans. Zoes started strong and grabbed the first points of the match, but her opponent was able to find two four-point moves to lead 8-3 at the break. Fries had an underhook as they were grounded, but as she came up, her opponent found a head-and-arm to finish the match with a fall.
At 145,
Maggie Ortmann competed for MBU. Ortmann trailed 4-0 at the break and, early in the second, drove her opponent down to put her own points on the board. Ortmann pushed in with the Russian tie to score once again and tie the bout at four apiece.
After a pair of step-outs, Ortmann used the front headlock to spin around and grab the lead. Ortmann found the wing and turned over her opponent to finish the comeback victory via fall in the second.
Talia Reed battled tough at 160. After her opponent scored the first four-point move, Reed found a step-out to not go to the break scoreless as her opponent led 4-1. Reed found eight unanswered points to lead 9-4. Her opponent found a late takedown, but Reed held on for the 9-6 victory.
The Spartans lost via fall at 180, but
Loghan Sumner went to work at 207. The freshman scored early and led 4-0 at the break. Sumner did not let off the gas and found four step-out points and a takedown to grab the technical fall at 207.
The Spartans travel to Marshall, Mo. to compete in the tought Missouri Valley Open on November 21, 2025.
