MARSHALL, Mo.- The Missouri Baptist Univeristy women's wrestling team competed at the tough Missouri Vally Open this weekend.
Loghan Sumner finished eighth at 207, as she led the Spartans with the highest finish from the weekend in Marshall, Mo.
Sumner dropped her opening bout against the No. 5 wrestler at 207, which sent her to the backside of the bracket. Her first consolation match pit her against Evelyn Stack of Tarleton State (Texas), where Stack was able to grab the first score, but Sumner responded late in the period to lead 4-2 at the break. Sumner went on to score a four-point move to seal the victory despite a four-point move in response by Stack late, as Sumner held on to win 8-6. Her next bout, No. 8 in the country, was against Diara Pomares of William Penn (Iowa), and Pomares scored a point in the first to take a 1-0 lead at the break. Sumner battled hard in the second to secure three points and the victory, sending her to day 2. A few competitors at 207 elected not to compete on Day 2, and Sumner found herself in the consolation quarterfinals. Sumner unfortunately fell 5-0 to place her in the seventh-place match against familiar opponent No.5 Naomi Duenas, Sumner's first loss of the tournament. Duenas was able to capture the 6-2 victory as Sumner finished eighth at 207 and 4-3 on the weekend.
Zoe Fries also competed well for the Spartans. Fries's first bout was primarily controlled by the Kuna, Idaho native as she scored three points in the first to lead at the break. Fries went on to score four more points, and despite her opponent's last-ditch efforts, Fries claimed the 7-4 victory. Fries fell in her next bout to place her in consolation. After she trailed 3-0 early in the second, Fries was able to find three points of her own to tie it up and eventually grabbed the fall in her first consolation match. Fries's second match also saw her down 4-0 early in the bout, but Fries responded well with nine unanswered points, which led to the fall at the 3:36 mark. Fries's last match of day one pitted her against No. 8 Lexi Ritchie of Lindsey Wilson (Ky.). Fries did not let the ranking affect her however, as she dominantly outscored Ritchie 8-0 before a fall in the second. Fries lost her first match of Day 2 and finished 4-2 on the weekend.
Andrea Karagiannis,
Maggie Ortmann,
Talia Reed, and
