ST. LOUIS- After multiple schedule changes due to the rain, the Missouri Baptist Softball took on Stephens College for their first conference game on Tuesday (Mar. 28). It was a long road, but the Spartans were finally able to compete on their home field.
Â
In game one of the double header against the Stars,
Alexandria Cafolla started off on the mound. After shutting out Stephens in the first inning, the Spartans made it onto the board in the bottom of the first. The bases were loaded and
Molly McPheeters was ahead on the count and ultimately walked, brining in
Allison Leigraf. Stephens was able to even things out in the second but that didn't last long after
Madalyn Bone hit a ground ball bringing in
Isabella Schlemmer. A second run was earned in the inning after
Natalie Archer hit the ball up the middle making it easy for Leigraf to make it home.
Â
With another run scored by the Stars in the third, the Spartans answered right back once again. Bone was back at it with two more RBI, batting in
Ellie Wessel and
Kolby Brake. The Stars saw their last run of the game in the top of the fourth after a single up the middle. The Spartans proceeded to earn four more runs in the next few innings. With
McKenna Joern coming in to pitch at the end of the game they wrapped things up nicely, 9-3.
Â
Big hits was the name of the game in the second match up against Stephens. After a run for the Stars in the top of the first, Leigraf got things going for the Spartans with a lead off home run. This was the freshman's first collegiate home run. Stephan's had a short lead starting in the second, the score being 3-1. After a run scored by McPheeters off a single from
Meghan Hager in the bottom of the second and a run earned by
Jenna Achs in the begging of the third, things evened out quickly.
Shelby Sievers, stepped up to the plate and knocked one right over the left field fence. Sievers three run home run brought the score 6-3. Kolby Break followed suit with a homer of her own, her second on the season.
Â
Brake scored once again in the fifth on an error by the shortstop. She proceeded to hit a single in the sixth to bring in McPheeters, thus ending the game, 11-3.
Shelby Sievers was able to earn the 'W' and the Spartans locked in a sweep over their first conference opponent of the season.
Â
Their next game is today (Mar. 29) against conference rival, Columbia College.
