CANTON, Mo. – Missouri Baptist women's lacrosse wrapped up the non-conference portion of its season with a loss and a win last week in a road trip that took North along the banks of the Mississippi. The Spartans played their final NCAA Division-II opponent of the season in Quincy University, losing 18-7 on Wednesday, before a thrashing of Culver-Stockton College (CSC), 19-6.
Coming off a pivotal 18-7 win against Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference foe Ottawa University the week prior, MoBap was unable to keep the streak going in the matchup with Quincy. The Hawks tallied the most goals against MBU in the three games the Hawks and Spartans have played since 2021 with 18. Thursday's return to NAIA competition was a different story, however, as MBU scored the most goals in a game of any this season and ran its record to 6-4 on the year.
Quincy def. Missouri Baptist, 18-7
While the scoreline showed a lopsided result at QU Stadium, MoBap had a handful of bright spots from the contest. MBU sophomore
Mack Miller was the offensive force for MBU in the attack, scoring four and setting a new career high. Seniors
Kamryn Bell,
Jordan Haeusser, and
Chayleb Deves all rattled the cage with one apiece to cap the MoBap scoring.
Quincy surrendered the first two goals of the game to Bell (1:35) and Miller (4:52) before scoring the next seven and asserting their influence. MBU tried to climb back and got the deficit down to four goals near the end of the second quarter, but a six-goal Hawks run that saw MoBap go scoreless in the third had the Spartans with too big of a hill to climb.
Haeusser and fellow midfielder
Caroline Karr caused three turnovers each, and Karr was busy with her stick and got five ground balls to lead all players in the category.
No. 6 Missouri Baptist def. Culver-Stockton, 19-6
MBU turned around and peeled off a new season high for goals in a game on Thursday, scoring 19 for the first time in nearly a year, going back to March 31st of last season. The Spartans got three hat tricks and more from Haeusser (five goals), Deves (four), and Cornett (four) in a game where seven different players scored for the visitors.
The first quarter was one where the offense got a goal each from the usual suspects of Cornett, Deves, Haeusser and Bell. Freshman attacker
Savannah Sowell added her name to the scoresheet and notched her first goal as a Spartan amid the 5-0 start in the opening seven minutes of the game.
MBU surrendered four of the next seven before the intermission before putting the brakes on the CSC offense in the final thirty minutes. MoBap allowed just two goals from the Wildcats and scored 11, with Haeusser taking the reins of the scoring by putting away four in the second half.
Miller was able to tally two goals and assists in the rout to pick up where leaving off in the Quincy game, while Cornett's two assists and Haeusser's one left them tied for the points lead with six each. Haeusser and Cornett also wrangled 13 draw controls, more than the entire Wildcats team managed.
The goalkeeping trio of
Amelia Shaw,
Alyssa Graebner, and
Kevynn Knoettner recorded a combined five saves, and the defense in front was especially active.
Natalie Patrick,
Sophia Zegar,
Loryn Dotson and
Brianna Fischer combined for six ground balls and three caused turnovers.
Missouri Baptist enters the final three games, all in the KCAC, with momentum now. The Spartans will have their final regular season away game on Wednesday, April 5th, in Leavenworth, Kan., against University of St. Mary at 4:00 pm.
