LEAVENWORTH, Kan. – It was another game to remember for the offense of Missouri Baptist women's lacrosse. The Spartans put up goals at a frightening pace and locked down their opponent in the process of their second Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference matchup of the 2023 season. MBU defeated University of Saint Mary (Kan.) 25-1 on Wednesday evening to finish their regular season travel record at 5-3.
MoBap (7-4, 2-0 in KCAC) remained undefeated in league play with the win against USM (3-3, 2-1 in KCAC). The Spartans have managed to score 43 goals and surrender just 8 in the two games against the Kansas KCAC-representatives of Saint Mary and Ottawa.
It was sheer dominance from the opening draw for the Spartans. The first quarter featured nearly a goal-per-minute average from the MBU attack as the visitors converted on 12 of their 22 shots in the first 15 minutes. The Spires were shut down so convincingly early on that they were unable to get an attempt off at the MoBap goal until a minute and a half into the second. MBU ended the day with 46 total shots to USM's five.
No Spartan player toted the goal-scoring torch as brightly as sophomore
Lydia Cornett. The Defiance, Mo. native put up five first half scores, which included a stretch of three-straight in the span of 70 seconds. Cornett ended her day with nine goals and two assists, breaking her own career high mark of seven and tying the observable program record for goals in a game set on March 10th, 2018, by Laura Ebers.
Seven different Spartans found the back of the cage on the day. Fellow sophomore
Mack Miller followed up her impressive eight-point week with another career high of five goals and an assist to finish tied for second in points with senior
Kamryn Bell (two goals, four assists).
Other MBU players to get goals included
Jordan Haeusser (three),
Chayleb Deves (three),
Caroline Karr (two), and
Brianna Fischer (one). The Spartans showed their supremacy with the draw as well, reigning in 23 of the restarts to the Spires' five. Haeusser led the line with eight, while Cornett controlled six.
Missouri Baptist will finish the regular season in a back-to-back game homestand at Spartan Field. The Spartans first will welcome a tilt against KCAC-newcomer University of Health Sciences & Pharmacy on Thursday, April 13th, at 4:00 pm before finishing off the conference schedule with Senior day against Midland University one day on, also at 4:00 pm.
