ST. LOUIS – For the first time in program history, Missouri Baptist women's lacrosse can lay claim to a regular season conference championship. The No. 7-ranked Spartans clinched the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference (KCAC) in style, finishing out the regular season with two games at Spartan Field and getting 46 total goals from the pair of KCAC conquests against University of Health Sciences & Pharmacy (UHSP) on Thursday and Midland University on Senior Day the following afternoon.
MoBap must await its draw for the KCAC women's lacrosse championship from the final results of the league slate to come over the weekend. The Spartans know that their fate lies in asserting themselves and continuing to run the table as the 1-seed if they are to also be crowned tournament champs of the league. MBU (9-4, 4-0 in KCAC) secured the 100th win in program history with the triumph against Midland, capping off a three-year run under head coach
Max Ruhl that the Spartans have achieved eight or more victories during the regular season.
No. 7 Missouri Baptist def. UHSP, 25-1
Missouri Baptist was purely dominant in the win against the Eutectics. The Spartans got goals from what felt like everyone who saw the field and a handful of hat tricks en route to the third straight victory of conference play and second straight game with a 25-1 score line. The home side came out of the gate with a wicked first quarter of 11 goals where they peppered the UHSP cage with 19 of the eventual total of 49 shots overall that set the tone.
MBU players
Lydia Cornett (five goals),
Caroline Karr (four),
Kamryn Bell (three),
Mack Miller (three), and
Brianna Fischer (three) all garnered hat tricks in the attacking effort. Freshmen
Gabby McMurry joined in on the goal party for her first points of the season, and defenders
Jackie Oehler and
Natalie Patrick also got their names on the score sheet as the surprise feel-good goals of the game.
Cornett and Bell were sensational in the performance against UHSP. The attacking pair combined for 16 points and recorded four assists apiece. The defense sprung the attack on numerous occasions, with seven successful clears, 17 draw controls, and 11 caused turnovers.
No. 7 Missouri Baptist def. Midland, 21-3
Prior to the matchup with the Warriors, MBU recognized senior members of the team in
Brianna Fischer,
Rebekah Broughton,
Amelia Shaw,
Chayleb Deves,
Kamryn Bell, and
Loryn Dotson. Between those six, MBU has gotten five Academic All-Conference awards, four KCAC All-Conference nods, and 30 wins while present in the program. Friday's 21-3 score against Midland pushed the Spartans to the century mark in victories since the team was started in 2010.
Bell continued her dominance and led in an assist column that was chock full, notching five of the Spartans' 13 assisted goals on the day. The St. Charles, Mo. native also had a hat-trick to lead in points with eight. Karr kept her scoring touch from the game prior and had a big day, scoring five to lead all players in goals.
Shaw wasn't called into action much, but made saves when needed (four over the two games) when the lockdown unit of Dotson, Patrick,
Sophia Zegar and Fischer let a shot through.
Missouri Baptist will play in the opening semifinal of the KCAC tournament on Thursday, April 20th, hosted at Spartan Field. MBU will play one of the two teams it faced in the games this week, with tomorrow's deciding game between Midland and UHSP deciding the 4-seed. First draw is set for 4 p.m., with the 2-seed vs. 3-seed semifinal to follow at 7 p.m.
