Comeback Bid Falls Short in 33-30 OT Loss at Culver-Stockton

CANTON, Mo. – The Missouri Baptist University football team fought back from a 10-point, second-half deficit but was stopped short of victory on Saturday evening in a 33-30 overtime loss on the road at Culver-Stockton College.

The Spartans are off to an 0-3 start and still in search of their first win in 2023, while the Wildcats (1-4) finally got over the hump to get win No. 1 of the year.

MBU junior signal caller Jordan Simpson threw the ball all over the field Saturday, amassing 282 yards in the air. Sixty-eight of those yards came on the game's first drive, where the Spartans eventually booted a field goal to go up 3-0.

Later in the first quarter, the Spartans forced a fumble that Brady Davis recovered, and on the next play, Simpson found Gavin Claud open in the middle of the field for a 26-yard touchdown pass to make it 10-0.

Culver-Stockton responded in the second with two touchdowns of their own. Spartan back Darius Morrison broke loose for a 23-yard touchdown run right before halftime, giving MBU a 17-14 lead at the break.

Right after halftime, the Wildcats scored back-to-back touchdowns to retake the lead at 27-17.

Looking for a response, MoBap took the next drive 71 yards on 10 plays, and Lionel Banks punched in a 3-yard touchdown run to bring the Spartans within a field goal.

After a stop on defense, MBU repeated their previous drive, marching 70 yards down the field, and Jonah Cox kicked a field goal to tie the game at 27 apiece.

Culver-Stockton methodically went down the field after the Spartan field goal and capped off its six-minute drive with a go-ahead field goal.

In hopes of taking the lead or sending the game to overtime, Missouri Baptist took the ball to the two-yard line and, with two seconds on the clock, called a timeout to set up a 19-yard field goal attempt for Jonah Cox. As time expired, Cox delivered and punched through his third FG of the game.

The Spartans were on offense to begin overtime and sputtered with a three-and-out, forcing yet another Cox field goal attempt. Culver-Stockton broke through the line and blocked the kick from the foot of Cox. Unfortunately, any score would give the Wildcats a win, meaning the Spartans needed a stop. The MBU defense yielded a first down to C-SC before forcing a 4th and 4 from the 8-yard line. Culver's Ethan Boulanger sent the 25-yarder through the uprights to sneak past MoBap in overtime, 33-30.

Gavin Claud and Joseph White were Jordan Simpson's favorite targets tonight, as they had 96 and 91 yards receiving, respectively. In addition to Simpson's 282 yards passing, Missouri Baptist's ground game was also on display Saturday night as the running back committee tallied 201 rushing yards with 103 from Morrison. Missouri Baptist outgained the Wildcats 515-374.

On the defensive front, d-lineman Anthony Graham totaled 10 tackles on the night, trailed by freshman defensive back Kaden Lutjen-Williams with nine.

Next Saturday, Missouri Baptist will return home for its Homecoming game against Peru State College with a Noon kickoff.
