ST. LOUIS – Missouri Baptist University's men's soccer team battled No. 16 Columbia College to a 1-1 draw in a rivalry game Saturday afternoon at R. Marvin Owens Field.
"The boys played some really good football today," head coach Jake Alvernia said. "It's good to get points from Columbia because it's a tough place to play. What a shame to concede a penalty kick in the last 20 seconds. We'll look forward to getting back at it on Wednesday."
The draw marked the Spartans' first of the season, bringing MBU's record to 8-5-1.
Ognjen Bozovic scored the lone goal for the Spartans, assisted by Jack Ridley. Columbia's only tally came via a penalty kick in the final seconds, resulting in the 1-1 draw.
Columbia outshot MBU 15-8 and limited the Spartans to just two shots on goal.
Pawel Wolny made five saves as MBU's goalkeeper. Three yellow cards were issued in the match, with two going to Columbia.
Both sides were scoreless at the end of the first half before Bozovic's goal in the 59th minute gave the Spartans a 1-0 lead.
Later, a penalty kick from Columbia's Carter Redford completed the comeback, ending the match in a 1-1 draw.
MBU (8-5-1) returns to action on Wednesday, Oct. 23, against Harris-Stowe State University at Spartan Field. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
