ST. LOUIS – Missouri Baptist University volleyball remained unbeaten in the American Midwest Conference with a 3-1 win over William Woods University on Thursday night. The Spartans opened their Homecoming week with a four-set victory on the strength of five blocks from
Kirsten van der Vleuten and a .529 hitting percentage from
Kassie Lee after losing set one.

MBU made 10 errors on 36 attacks to hit .000 in set one and fell to a William Woods squad that made just three errors and was led by a trio of kills from Luciana Paiva Pereira.
The two teams matched each other point-for-point in set two until a kill from freshman
Elina Arsov sent the Spartans on an 8-1 run and pushed the team ahead 20-11. In the run,
Fernanda Perini and
Gabi Jakubowska notched two kills each and were helped by a service ace from
Julia Pereira. MBU rebounded with a match-high .375 hitting percentage in a 25-17 win.
Set three was the most tightly contested. Tied at 19,
Madison Moore registered a kill off a feed from
Maiana Coelho that started a 3-0 stretch. Now up 22-20, Jakubowska took over and tallied kills on two of the next five plays to end the set 25-22.
After falling behind early in set four at 3-1, the Spartans collected points on eight of the next 10 plays. The Owls made a flurry of errors while Moore applied more pressure with a pair of kills. Coelho found Lee late in the set for her 45
th assist of the match and to push WWU to the brink at 23-14. Jakubowska sent over an ace before a Pamela Durazo attack error ended things with a 3-1 final.
