New-Look Spartans Open Season with High Hopes at Abe Lemons Classic

Oklahoma City, Okla. — Missouri Baptist University men's basketball is set to tipoff its 2024-25 regular season at the Abe Lemons Classic this weekend, with matchups against The Master's University on Friday and Ottawa University on Saturday.

First year head coach Taylor Jarvis, who grew up immersed in college basketball as the son of a coach, feels a deep connection to this time of year. "This time of the year is always very special to me," Jarvis said. "I'm excited to create more memories with this year's team. I have a special group of guys who have bought into the culture. They've been dedicated and intentional in their work, and the staff has done an incredible job preparing them for success this season."

The Spartans enter the Abe Lemons Classic eager to make a statement, with Coach Jarvis noting the high level of competition at the event. "There's no better place to start your season at the NAIA level," he said. "We'll be tested from the jump on a national scene, playing two great NAIA programs. This group is tough, plays very hard, and plays together. I'm optimistic about this season and our goal to get to Kansas City and play in the national tournament. This journey starts here in Oklahoma City."

Players to Watch

MBU returns key players who were instrumental in last year's successful 21-10 campaign, which resulted in an appearance in the AMC Championship Finals. Breven McMullen and Evan Palmquist headline the list of returners, expected to lead the team once again. McMullen, praised by Jarvis for his shooting and leadership, averaged 9.7 points per game last season, while Palmquist is MBU's highest scorer with 11.6 points per game that is returning to the roster.

Jarvis highlighted the significance of their veteran presence, particularly senior Connor Redrow. "Connor is our rock and the heartbeat of this team. He's returned with a mission to have a great season individually and collectively," Jarvis said. "We'll lean on him a lot this season." Jarvis also praised Palmquist, saying, "Him and I have a great relationship, and I'm excited for him to make an impact as a key contributor."

New Additions

The Spartans have several promising newcomers who are expected to play important roles. Among them, Austin Lewis, a 6-foot-10 sharpshooter, and Thai Elder, an elite athlete who has impressed the coaching staff with his skills and work ethic.

The Master's University (Friday, 3:00 p.m.)
MBU will open the Classic against The Master's University, which is currently ranked No. 10 in the country. The Mustangs began their season with a dominant 109-23 win over Bethesda University of California and finished last season with a 24-9 record. "This is a very talented team," Jarvis commented. "Our guys are excited to show the brand of basketball we play."
