MBU Drops Overtime Heartbreaker to Grand View, 89-84

OLATHE, Kan. – Missouri Baptist University men's basketball fell to Grand View University, 89-84, in an overtime thriller Friday night to open the MidAmerica Nazarene Tournament.

Despite a standout performance from Breven McMullen, who posted 31 points, two rebounds, two assists, and two steals, including a clutch three-pointer in the final seconds to send the game to overtime, the Spartans dropped their third consecutive game to start the season, falling to 0-3.

"Guys fought today. It was a hard one to lose as I felt we were in control the whole game," head coach Taylor Jarvis said. "I have to do a better job keeping us in rhythm offensively and closing the game out. Missed free throws and going 1-for-16 from 3 in the second half and overtime really hurt us. Proud of the guys' fight."

Evan Palmquist and Austin Lewis joined McMullen in double figures. Palmquist contributed 17 points, five rebounds, and two assists, while Lewis added 13 points, eight rebounds, and seven blocks.

MBU shot 42.2 percent from the floor but struggled from beyond the arc, making just 8 of 33 attempts for a 24.2 percent clip.

The Spartans led 44-38 at halftime and held a 14-point advantage in the second half before Grand View came back to win the game in overtime.

MBU will close out the tournament on Saturday with a matchup against MidAmerica Nazarene University at 8 p.m.
