Spartans Win Home Opener

ST. LOUIS - In MoBap's home opener against (RV) Webber International the Spartans picked up their second win with a 12-4 final behind five goals from Mackaylee Miller and 14 saves from Amelia Shaw.

 

FIve minutes into the contest the Spartans gained a 1-0 lead as Miller netted her first goal of the day coming off an assist Caroline Karr, and shortly after KJ Bonenberger made it a two goal lead with just over eight minutes left in the first quarter.

 

The Spartans' defense and Amelia Shaw was able to keep Webber scoreless throughout the first quarter as Shaw tallied three saves in the opening 15 minutes of play.

 

Webber was able to cut into MBU's lead as they scored the first goal of the second frame, but MBU was able to answer as Karr assisted on a goal from Delaney Pechnik to make it 3-1.

 

Following another goal from Webber that made it 3-2 the Spartans went on a 4-0 run heading into halftime as Karr buried a goal, Natalie Patrick scored coming off a pass from Lydia Cornett, and Miller tacked on two more goals.

 

Up 7-2 after the break the Spartans kept rolling as Karr and Kiersten Lang tacked on two more goals to increase their lead to seven.

 

In the first three minutes of the half Shaw racked up three more saves on her way to six during the shutout third quarter.

 

In the final 15 minutes Webber was able to net a couple of goals, but the Spartans were able to score three of their own to win 12-4.

 

Patrick scored her second goal of the day in the fourth quarter and Miller had goals four and five in the final five minutes of the contest.

 

With just under two minutes remaining in the contest Shaw made save number 14 on the day for career save 200.

 

The Spartans racked up 18 shots on goal throughout the game as 12 of them snuck past the Webber goalie.

 

The win puts the Spartans at 2-0 on the new campaign and they will be back in action on Thursday on the road at (8) Marian University at 3:00 pm CST.
