ST. LOUIS - Missouri Baptist welcomed Concordia (Mich.) to Spartan Field and got on the scoreboard first with five goals in the first quarter and never looked back and went on to win 15-6.
Â
In a non-conference contest between the Spartans and Cardinals it seemed like it was going to be a quiet first quarter, but with about five minutes left MBU got on the scoreboard as Skyler Morrissey found the back of the net off an assist from Lydia Cornett.
Â
Shortly after, Caroline Karr made it 2-0 with a man up goal.
Â
The Spartans kept rolling late in the first as Cornett, Marissa Oldham, and Kiersten Lang all scored in the final two minutes.
Â
Down by five in the second quarter Concordia finally got on the scoreboard with back to back goals.
Â
Karr responded with a goal off another assist from Cornett to make it 6-2.
Â
Following another goal from the Cardinals before halftime, Cornett was able to bury a pair of goals for MBU to go into the break up 8-3.
Â
The third quarter started with some back and forth play as the Cardinals scored followed by a Spartans' goal from Cornett, and then Concordia scored again and Cornett responded again to make it 10-5.
Â
The Cardinals got one more goal in the third quarter, but that would be all they got as the Spartans' defense shut them out in the fourth quarter.
Â
Delaney Pechnik, Cornett, and KJ Bonenberger all scored man up goals in the final frame, and Morrissey and Karr each tacked on one more goal to give MBU a 15-6 victory over Concordia.
Â
In the final seconds of the contest Karr picked up the final draw control for the Spartans giving her 200 draw controls in her career.
Â
Cornett finished with six goals and three assists for nine points on the day.
Â
Karr picked up six ground balls to lead the team followed by Jackie Oehler and Cornett with five and four, respectively.
Â
The Spartans' defense kept the Cardinals at bay as Natalie Patrick caused three turnovers and a handful of Spartans forced two.
Â
Amelia Shaw made nine saves and picked up the win in the crease for Missouri Baptist.
Â
MBU's next contest will be on the road in Kentucky as they take on (5) University of the Cumberlands next Tuesday.
