ST. LOUIS – Missouri Baptist University women's volleyball split the final day of the Eutectic Classic on Saturday with a 3-1 win over Evangel University and a 3-0 loss to Culver-Stockton College.
Evangel Recap
Set one was a back-and-forth affair until an attack from
Maiana Coelho sparked a 3-0 run to put the Spartans ahead 21-19. Vivianna Sanchez, Evangel's leader in kills for the match, struck back with a point, but Coelho found
Gabi Jakubowska three times over the next four plays to end the set 25-21.
Tied at seven in the second set, an attack error put the ball in the hands of serving specialist
Luiza Arsufi. She sandwiched a pair of aces between a kill from Coelho and one from freshman
Elina Arsov to send MBU out to a five-point advantage at 12-7.
At 12-9, the Spartans rattled off seven kills over the next nine plays including three from
Kirsten van der Vleuten to take control 20-10. The Valor battled back as much as they could, but Lee finished them off with her fourth and fifth kills of the set to wrap up a 25-19 win.
Both teams hit in the negative in set three, but Evangel prevailed with a 25-17 win on four service aces and five fewer errors than Missouri Baptist.
MBU wrapped up the job in set four on a breakout frame from
Riley Kortkamp who had five kills and Jakubowska who had seven. The team rebounded with a .273 hitting percentage and improved to 7-9 with a 3-1 win over the Valor.
