ST. LOUIS – The Missouri Baptist University men's soccer team was defeated by No. 13 Cumberland University, 2-1, in a close contest this afternoon at Spartan Field.
Sophomore Sergej Misic scored his fifth goal of the season, providing the Spartans' lone tally of the game.
Fellow sophomore Edvin Mahmutovic picked up his third assist of the season on Misic's goal.
In his first start of the year, goalkeeper Callum McKinlay recorded five saves for the Spartans.
Cumberland outshot MBU 20-11, with a second-half penalty kick propelling the Phoenix to victory.
Robbie Lyons scored both goals for the Phoenix, his seventh and eighth of the season.
Lyons opened the scoring in the 23rd minute, giving Cumberland a 1-0 lead. MBU responded quickly, with Misic equalizing just a minute later to bring the score to 1-1.
In the second half, a penalty kick from Lyons secured the 2-1 lead, which held for the remainder of the match.
MBU (4-4) returns to action on Tuesday at 4 p.m. CDT against Clarke University in Dubuque, Iowa.
