ST. LOUIS — Despite managing Central Methodist University's powerful offense during the first half of the match, Missouri Baptist University women's soccer eventually fell 6-0 to the fourth-ranked team on Wednesday (Sept. 4).
Senior goalkeeper Gabby Mattli displayed an excellent performance throughout the match, making eight energy-creating saves. Mattli ended the game with a .571 save percentage, stopping three goals in the first half and five in the second. In total, she faced 14 shots on goal.
Natalie Gum and Piper Brown also stood out as playmakers. They continued to fight against the Eagles until the last seconds of the match.
Gum made a few slide tackles on CMU players in clutch moments and played a key role in transitioning the ball. The midfielder also took one of the Spartans' two shots on goal.
Brown never backed down from a 50/50 ball, and she cleared it quickly. Forward Abby Layton also showed the same grit as Brown in the second half , playing a defensive role.
Forward Gabby Wood broke away from CMU's defense a couple of times throughout the match, coming within feet of scoring. With four defenders on her, Paige Rice also created a scoring chance late in the second half.
Other shots on goal:
Emma Selsor - #8
Jordyn Besserman - #9
The Spartans look to create momentum this Saturday, Sept. 7, on the road against ninth-ranked Cumberland University at 1:00 p.m.
