Spartans Fall Behind Early, Cannot Mount a Comeback Against Columbia

ST. LOUIS - Missouri Baptist hosted the undefeated (RV) Columbia Cougars in an AMC matchup that Columbia took control of early and never looked back as they stayed undefeated, beating the Spartans 78-59.

The first bit of the game was punch and counterpunch before the Cougars went on a 17-6 run to gain a 21-11 lead over the Spartans.

The Spartans went on a bit of a scoring drought in the second quarter before Audrey Payne knocked down their first field goal in the frame from beyond the arc. Columbia held a 16 point lead over Missouri Baptist at the halftime break.

At halftime of the Saturday matinee MBU Cheer and Dance showcased a performance with their mini clinic.

At the break the Spartans were leading in points off turnovers and Mariana Cubero had five rebounds. Missouri Baptist was outsized on the interior with Kayleigh Winch's minutes being limited due to foul trouble.

The second half was similar to the first as the Cougars kept control of the contest, but Sophia Horton had a huge half as she scored 19 points in the 20 minutes.

Columbia went on to stay undefeated with a 78-59 victory over the Spartans.

The Spartans ended up winning the fourth quarter 24-21 as Horton had 14 points and three rebounds.
