ST. LOUIS - Missouri Baptist welcomed the Comets of Cottey College to round out their conference homestand, and the Comets came into the Petty SRC and left with a 72-57 victory over the Spartans.
The Spartans and Comets came out of the gates ready to go as they battled on both ends of the court. Cottey held a slim 16-14 lead over Missouri Baptist heading into the second frame.
Cottey opened up the second quarter with a 16-2 run, making it 32-16 with just four minutes left before halftime. They held that margin over the Spartans for the remainder of the half as they went into the break with the score at 39-24.
The Comets shot a remarkable 46.9 percent from the field and 44.4 percent from beyond the arc. Cottey improved their shooting percentage from the first quarter by almost 14 percent, which was a key factor to gaining their 15 point lead at the half.
The second half went similar to the first quarter as both teams played a tight game. The game got much more physical as it went on with a lot of whistles in the second half.
Aliyah Williams provided a spark for the Spartans off the bench as she went 3-3 from three point land and finished with 15 points, leading Missouri Baptist. Orian Anderson also did wonders for the Spartans off the bench with nine points, five rebounds, four assists, and two steals.
Cottey created 20 points off turnovers and finished the game with just under 40 percent shooting from the field.
The game ended in a 72-57 victory for the Comets in their second contest of the season against Missouri Baptist.
