MBU Basketball Uses Double-Overtime to Take Down Illinois Springfield in Sunday Exhibition

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – Missouri Baptist University men's basketball defeated the University of Illinois Springfield (NCAA Division II) 79-77 in a double-overtime thriller for an exhibition game on Sunday evening.

Javaris Moye hit the game-winning layup with 53 seconds left in double-overtime ahead of a pair of defensive stops from the Spartans in the final seconds of the game. Moye continued strong play in 2025-26, posting a game-high 20 points along with four rebounds and a pair of steals.

UIS received double-digit points from four players, including Isaiah Davis (17), Alex Stell (16), Tye Banks (15), and Jordan Rice (13). MBU used a balanced approach, receiving eight or more points from seven players. The Spartans were more efficient from the field, shooting 31-63 (49.2 percent), and received 31 points off the bench, compared to the Prairie Stars' 14.

Taylor Jarvis' squad took a 33-27 lead into the locker room at halftime before getting outscored 32-38 in the second half. Davis had a game-tying three-pointer for UIS with 48 seconds left, and was later denied a game-winning layup by an Isaiah Dixon block with two seconds left in the contest to force overtime.

Down 67-70 with 10 seconds left in the first OT, Preston Fortner found Austin Lewis for a three-pointer that tied the game and forced a second overtime.

Davis put the Prairie Stars ahead with an early three in the second overtime period, when another three from Lewis and a steal followed by a fast-break layup from Fortner gave MBU separation. Rice tied the contest at 77 with a layup at 1:22, answered by Moye with 53 seconds left.

Davis had one more three-point opportunity with two seconds left in the game, but missed the shot as time expired to give the Spartans a thrilling 79-77 victory.

MBU basketball continues Heart of America Athletic Conference play on Saturday, Jan. 3, with a 2 p.m. start at Mount Mercy University. A live stream will be available on the Urban Edge Network, and live stats will be available on the Missouri Baptist Spartans mobile app.
