Spartans Sweep Mobile in Pool E Behind 23 Kills from Jakubowska

SIOUX CITY, Iowa – No. 12-seeded Missouri Baptist University women's volleyball swept the 20th-seeded University of Mobile (Ala.) on Thursday morning to open play in the NAIA National Tournament Pool E. The 25-17, 25-22, 25-22 win extended the Spartans' winning streak to 16 and set up a one-game elimination scenario on Friday at 9 a.m. against the No. 5 seed Corban University.

The program's all-time career kills leader, Gabi Jakubowska, added 23 to her total on Thursday with a .375 percentage to lead the team. Allana Capella followed behind with 12 kills, while Fernanda Perini and Kassie Lee both hit above .400 with eight and six kills, respectively. Valentina Navarro guided the offense with 42 assists and added three aces. On defense, Perini and Summer McDonough each had three block assists, and Julia Reis Pereira had a match-high 14 digs.

MBU opened the first set with a 6-2 run and never looked back in a dominant 25-17 victory. The Spartans hit .355 with 16 kills on 31 attacks and held the Rams to a .033 hitting percentage.

Jakubowska and Capella each had six kills in the second set, where MBU hit .441 with 19 kills on 34 attacks and four errors.  Mobile kept it close, however, tying the match at 21-21. Capella untied the match with a kill ahead of a Navarro service ace. Jakubowska and Lee ended it at 25-22 with consecutive kills.

Two kills from Jakubowska, and a block from Perini and McDonough dug the team out of an early 2-5 hole to put them up 6-5 in set three. The teams traded points right until the end of the match, before Jakubowska ended the sweep with four kills on MBU's final four points.
