Spartan Tennis Drops Pair of 4-3 Heartbreakers to Ranked William Woods

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – In a pair of heartbreaking finishes, Missouri Baptist University men's and women's tennis both fell 4-3 to ranked William Woods University on Wednesday in their final home matches of the season.

Men's Tennis

With the loss, the Spartans dropped to 12-6 overall and 2-1 in conference play, finishing their home schedule with an 8-4 mark. MBU has now lost back-to-back matches, both coming against nationally ranked opponents.

The Owls claimed the doubles point to open the match, despite a gritty 7-6 win at No. 1 doubles from Luca da Silva Ebenriter and Sebastian Junghanns.

In singles, Ebenriter, Junghanns, and Arkhip Tokmakov earned victories to keep MBU in the hunt, but the Owls clinched the win with three singles wins of their own. The deciding match came down to court four, where Lucas Kzam narrowly fell in a third-set tiebreaker, 7-6 (6), after leading 6-3 in the breaker.

Women's Tennis

The Spartan women mirrored the men's result, falling to 9-7 overall and 2-1 in conference play, while finishing 5-4 at home.

William Woods again struck first by taking the doubles point, although Polina Agapitova and Mariana Azevedo tallied a dominant 6-1 win at No. 3 doubles. MBU had a set point to secure the doubles point but couldn't convert.

In singles play, Agapitova, Yvonne Shannon, and Jocelynn Carmody each earned wins to bring the Spartans level. However, the Owls escaped with the match, winning the three other singles courts to seal another 4-3 victory.
