Missouri Baptist Advances to HOA Championship After 21-13 Win Over Ottawa in Semifinal Game

ST. LOUIS  –  Missouri Baptist University Women's Lacrosse punched their ticket to the Heart of America Conference Championship Game after producing a dominant performance against Ottawa University in the semifinal contest held on Wednesday (April 16), beating the Braves 21-13.

First team all-conference attacker Lydia Cornett led the team in points with nine, followed by fellow first team attacker Mack Miller with eight. First team midfielder and Newcomer of the Year, Olivia Julian, led the team in goals with six.

MBU's defense played with ferocity and a hunger for the ball.

Cornett, winner of two weekly national honors (announced on Tuesday, April 15), scored the first goal of the game. Soon after, senior Kiersten Lang scored off an assist from Cornett.

Ottawa put a point on the scoreboard, but Miller, KJ Bonenberger (assisted by Cornett), and Marissa Oldham each scored a goal in response. Julian also scored two, herself.

Going into the second quarter ahead by six goals, Missouri Baptist continued to dominate the field, despite Ottawa's persistent gameplay.
OU scored the first goal of the period, followed by another goal scored by MBU's Alexis Taylor off an assist from Miller.

After letting the Braves go on a three-goal run, the Spartans were finally able to take possession away from Ottawa, backed by a caused turnover from Cornett.

Miller went on to score three more goals before the end of the quarter, one of them being assisted by Madison Terell.

Cornett and Julian scored the last two goals of the period, bringing the score to 13-7 at half.

About two minutes into the third quarter, Cornett scored again, assisted by Miller.

OU scored two goals before Julian scored her fourth of the day. The Braves responded with another goal, but Cornett buried two in off free position attempts. With thirty seconds left in the quarter, Julian scored for the Spartans off an assist from Cornett.

Ottawa would not quit, scoring the first three goals of the fourth period. Taylor, assisted by Miller, scored a goal to kill OU's momentum. Julian scored the Spartans' 20th goal not even a minute later.

Miller scored the last goal of the contest, making the final score 21-13.

With this win, Missouri Baptist will travel to Benedictine College in Atchison, Kan. to face the BC Ravens in the championship game at 1 PM.
