ST. LOUIS – The Missouri Baptist University men's soccer team picked up its first win on Saturday afternoon with a 2-1 victory against the Concordia University Bulldogs.
The Spartans faced a challenging possession battle in the opening period. After 39 minutes of play, Jake Champion delivered a brilliant pass to the middle, where Anthony Coppotelli capitalized with a shot that was deflected by a defender and ended up in the back of the net.
The Bulldogs' goalie Nolan Fuelberth came up big with five saves against the Spartans' offense, while Missouri Baptist managed to fire off seven shots in the opening period alone.
In the second half, Matthew O'Reilly delivered a corner kick into the box, where Craig Moore rose and scored with a header.
Concordia continued to apply offensive pressure, earning a penalty kick at 77:41 and capitalizing on it off the boot of Kai Olbrich. MBU locked down defensively from there, however, allowing no more shot attempts to complete the game with a 2-1 final score.
Evan Baish closed out the match with an impressive .800 save percentage and four saves, while Moore picked up the game-winner.
The Spartans are set to host Harris-Stowe State University in their next contest on Wednesday, Sept. 3, at 7 p.m.
