No. 9 Spartans Showcase Depth in Sweep of Stephens College

COLUMBIA, Mo. – The No. 9 Missouri Baptist women's volleyball team showcased its depth Thursday night, cruising to a straight-set victory over nonconference opponent Stephens College. Ten different Spartans recorded at least one kill in the 25-14, 25-17, 25-19 victory.

The Spartans came out firing in the opening set, highlighted by freshman Katie Hunt's impressive serving. Hunt helped MBU jump out to a 7-1 lead, recording two service aces during the run. Missouri Baptist continued to build momentum, extending its lead to 18-6 while capitalizing on the Stars' attacking and service errors. Stephens managed to string together a few small runs, but kills by Abby Harder halted any comeback attempts. Mia Klak delivered the set-clinching kill to give MBU a 25-14 victory.

The second set proved more competitive early, with both teams battling to a 9-9 tie. The No. 9 Spartans responded with a balanced offensive attack, as kills from multiple players helped establish a 17-13 advantage midway through the set. MBU's defense stepped up down the stretch, with Emma Hlavsa and Martina Ligabue combining for a block to seal the 25-17 victory. The block marked Hlavsa's second of the night.

Missouri Baptist found its offensive rhythm in the third set, posting an impressive .400 hitting percentage. The Spartans also applied relentless pressure from the service line, recording eight aces in the final frame. Nia Cillo and Hunt led the charge with three aces apiece, keeping the Stars' defense on its heels. Klak once again delivered the final blow, closing out the match with a kill to secure the 25-19 victory and complete the sweep.

Several Spartans turned in season-best performances in the win. Caroline Tomlinson made the most of her start, recording a season-high nine kills and two blocks, leading MBU in both categories. Right-side hitter Noa Reculard also reached a season-high with seven kills. Cillo contributed four service aces while adding a season-best six assists.

As a team, Missouri Baptist displayed exceptional offensive efficiency throughout the match, finishing with a remarkable .356 hitting percentage.

The No. 9 Spartans return home tomorrow night for a highly anticipated conference showdown against No. 25 Benedictine College. With both teams looking to strengthen their position in the conference standings, the matchup could carry significant implications for the championship race as the season progresses.
