Spartans Lose to Baker on Last-Second Free Throws

ST. LOUIS – Missouri Baptist University men's basketball dropped a heartbreaking 69-68 decision to Baker University on Saturday afternoon at the Carl & Deloris Petty SRC in a Heart of America Athletic Conference thriller.

The Spartans fall to 15-9 overall and 9-7 in conference play, while the Wildcats improve to 9-14 and 7-8 in league action. The game featured 22 lead changes and 15 ties, with Baker escaping with a win on a pair of clutch free throws from Myles Tucker.

MBU was led by Javaris Moye, who finished with a game-high 22 points to go along with five steals and four rebounds. Merquiche Lewis added 13 points, nine rebounds, and three steals, while Austin Lewis chipped in 12 points on four three-pointers.

Tucker's 19 points paced Baker, while Cam Jones added 16 points and nine rebounds.

The opening half was tightly contested throughout. The Spartans built early momentum behind three-pointers from Austin Lewis and Drew Kegerreis, grabbing an 11-6 advantage midway through the period. Baker answered with perimeter shooting of its own, evening the score and trading leads down the stretch as the game was knotted at 30 heading into the locker room.

The second half continued the back-and-forth theme. Missouri Baptist pushed ahead 40-35, but Baker countered with a run fueled by Jones and Tucker, reclaiming the lead and setting up a tense final stretch.

Neither team led by more than three points over the final six minutes.

With 12 seconds remaining, Cam Jones finished at the rim to give Baker a 66-65 advantage. After a defensive stand, Jones split a pair of free throws with nine seconds left to extend the lead to two.

With 0.6 seconds left on the clock, Lewis knocked down a three-pointer to beat the buzzer. Upon further review, the Spartans were called for a technical foul, putting Tucker on the free-throw line for the Wildcats. Tucker calmly converted both free throws as time expired to seal the win for Baker.
