Spartans Sweep Eagles in Home Opener

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Missouri Baptist University women's volleyball team opened its home schedule in dominant fashion, sweeping Central Methodist University, 25-20, 25-17, 25-19, Friday night at the Carl & Deloris Petty Sports and Recreation Complex.

The Spartans battled through long rallies and several momentum swings throughout the match, ultimately finding another gear late in each set to secure the conference victory.

Set one opened with a service ace from Martina Ligabue before the two teams traded runs throughout the frame. With Central Methodist leading 6-4, the Spartans responded with five consecutive points, highlighted by two kills from Ashlynn Hughes, to take a 9-6 lead.

The Eagles answered with a run of their own, taking a 13-10 lead following several MBU attack errors. After Central Methodist extended its lead to 19-16, a timeout proved timely for the Spartans. MBU closed the set on a 9-1 run to take the opening frame, with Ligabue setting up Hughes and Isabella Munari for key kills down the stretch.

The Spartans carried the momentum into set two, scoring the first two points before Central Methodist battled back to tie the set at 6-6. Nina Cillo then took over from the service line, recording three consecutive aces to help MBU build a 15-9 advantage.

The Spartans continued to answer each Central Methodist push with runs of their own. Kills from Herdie Castillo, Alohilani Bursey and Munari helped MBU close out the set, 25-17, and take a 2-0 lead in the match.

Set three proved to be the closest of the night, featuring seven ties. Central Methodist's Juliana Amaral recorded a pair of service aces to give the Eagles their largest lead of the set at 11-9.

The teams remained locked at 18-18 before the Spartans closed the match in style, scoring seven of the final eight points to claim the set, 25-19, and complete the sweep.

MBU also held the advantage statistically, recording more kills than Central Methodist, 38-26, while also holding a 9-4 edge in blocks.

The Spartans will have a quick turnaround, returning to action Saturday at noon against Missouri Valley University at home.
