For the MBU women's soccer team, the third time was the charm, as they faced McKendree University for the third time this season in Thursday's American Midwest Conference Championship Game in Lebanon, Illinois.
After two regular season losses, the Lady Spartans finally upset the NAIA's 10th ranked McKendree Bearcats 3-2. Scoring for the Lady Spartans were
Taylor Hay,
Jennifer Schoon, and
Sarah O'Donnell.
Michelle Smith earned the win at the net, with three saves.
With the win, the Lady Spartans earned the AMC Tournament Title and an automatic berth into the 2009 NAIA Women's Soccer National Championship. Missouri Baptist's opening round location and opponent will be announced this Sunday. They will play the opening round on Saturday, November 21st. The winner of that match will move on to the final site, with games taking place November 30th - December 5th in Decatur, Alabama.
At Thursday's game, members of the AMC All-Conference Team were announced, and several MBU athletes earned honors. Taking home First Team honors were sophomore forward
Sarah O'Donnel and freshman defender
Christina Frkovic. Earning an Honorable Mention nod were senior forward
Taylor Hay, sophomore forward
Amy Kelly, and senior defender
Amanda Renaud.
Heather Allen and
Nicole Hazlett were named to the Academic All-Conference team.
